if a business get staffs photos do they need model releases or some other contract to put the images online on their company website?

Yep. Generally in those cases the internal marketing folks will take care of the releases

No, not unless they are specifically being used in an advert for the company. Simply posting images of staff for informational purposes (image + "Dave Brown, VP sales NW region") wouldn't need a release.

there is typically a clause in the employment contract that allows the employer to use work and business related images of the employee for editorial and marketing purposes.

when shooting headshots, you don't have to worry about anything other than doing a great job and delivering quickly. the details are for the employers to worry about.
