At the moment, I am flush with cameras and looking to consolidate them.

here is current collection:
5D Mk II **now at Canon being repaired for what I hope is just a broken focusing screen**
5Dc--one of my all time favorite cameras, want to stay FF, but not tied to it
50D--an awesome camera with excellent IQ, but a little dated and my older eyes can't see the smallish screen as well as in the past
T3i--love the video and the swivel screen and the features present for such a low cost camera. Also have a battery grip on this one, which is handy
400D--this one is IR converted, so will probably keep this one
XTi--handy for visiting family and friends

I do commercial property, real estate, and landscape work plus a whole lot of portrait and beach photography. My other interests include wildlife and sports.

So I definitely need first: a nice FF camera
if can get a nice crop camera as well that would be great

my desires:
top rate IQ above anything else, I will suffer through deficiencies to get the best IQ
then AF
then ISO performance
then large screen, swivel and live view
off camera flash control
dual memory card slots
Frames per second

any suggestions/recommendations??

thanks all !!

I would gladly trade them all in for a 1Dx! but don't think there is enough value there to make up for a $6,000 price tag. I would be willing to add another $1,000 cash but still think I would come up short on the 1Dx

here are the current values for the cameras per Amazon pricing for "very good" to "mint" condition used cameras:

5D Mk II: $1600 (mint condition)
5Dc: $750 (very good to "mint'' condition)
50D: $500-750 (mint condition really, but such a wide range in prices with some $1000)
T3i: $500 with kit lens, with battery grip maybe $575
XTi: $275
400D (IR converted): will keep this one
total: $3900 or there abouts

If I am wrong on these numbers please let me know

I was thinking maybe:
6D + 7D (really like the wireless capabilities of the 6D, to send images to my tablets so clients can see real time)
5D Mk III + keep the T3i
used 1D Mark IV plus keep the 5Dc

5DIII and keep the 50D instead of the 600D, because then you'll have 2 cameras with a very similar control interface (not to mention a better backup camera).

I just don't like 1.6x anymore. So for me 5dmk3 and even older 5dc would work. Interface, guy is already using five different cameras.:)

thanks!

I like your idea, the 50D is definitely my choice for still photography over the T3i but I do so like the T3i's bigger screen and it's swivel capabilities. (I must add, my eyesight has gotten rather bad)

Bobbyz, I like your gear!

I too love the 5Dc

I am not the same fan of the 1.6x crop anymore either, but for the wildlife and sports it does come in handy. I have the 70-200mm L plus the 1.4x extender and that combo does me fine when used with my 1.6x crop cameras---I guess I could just get the 2x extender and use on a FF camera with pretty similar effect (400mm effective focal length vs. crop effective focal length of 444mm)

that would save me buying another body

the 1D series's 1.3x factor is a nice compromise, so maybe a 1D Mk III or IV in combo with a true FF portrait camera like the 5D Mk II or III (used)

no mention of the 6D, is the 5D III just that significantly better IQ/AF/etc that it isn't even worth a mention?

thanks all!

I think you have some pretty wishful thinking there. The 5d2 is under $1500 for a factory refurb with warranty right now. 5dc are going for $650 with a grip and batts. 50d, look to your low number as I have seen 7D's go for you higher number. I'm sure you could maybe get those numbers but you are going to have to sit on them for a while... they won't move quickly at those prices, IMHO.

thanks John!

that is what I want to know. I treat my gear with kid gloves and they get serviced regularly by Canon so they really are in mint condition. That being said, it is hard to convince a long distance buyer of that, so outside of selling to a local I probably will have to settle for less.

All my cameras will come with extra batteries, some with car chargers, some with grips and have plenty of lenses (kit and otherwise) to add to them. I have never sold anything online so not even sure how to go about that sort of thing. Any suggestions?

thanks all!

I have yet to see something from 6d as far as action is concerned and also using outer AF points. But when I had 5dmk3 I loved its AF, so much better than my old 1dmk2. I used it with 300mm f2.8 IS and it joy to use. No problem using any of those 40 or so cross points. Most other bodies it is mainly center point.

Even when shooting kids, I could keep camera in AI servo and use outer points without issues when shooting f1.4, f2. Just couldn't do this with other cameras I have owned.

The 6D is great. It is actually better in terms of IQ than the 5DIII (by a little bit which is not really noticeable in real-world shooting). But your 2nd priority is AF, which takes the 6D completely out of the running when you can afford the 5DIII.

To put it another way, the 6D is maybe 5% better in IQ than the 5DIII. The 5DIII is about 300% better in AF than the 6D.*

*I am pulling these numbers out of thin air, but you get the gist.

I think where the 6D's edge in ISO performance is really noticeable is above 6400. If you like to shoot a lot in really low light it will have an advantage. The AF... no, it's not as good as the 5D3 but it's better than anything on the OP's gear list. The outer points on the 6D work well and you're certainly not limited to center point focus and recompose as many seem to believe. The burst rate is where it comes up a little short. If you do a lot of rapid fire shooting it probably won't make you happy, if you tend to anticipate the shot you'll probably be more than happy.

that makes a lot of sense and is right in my wheelhouse, I need top IQ but AF is next on the list of importance so as you say, the 6D falls short. I tend to shoot a lot both wide open with primes and at long end of 70-200mm 2.8 zoom so knowing your real world experience with the 5D III in this regard means a lot to me. Thanks guys!

the ISO performance is important but I have so many, "can't miss" shots, where I can't recreate even if I wanted to, so AF is paramount. Burst rate is not too big a deal for me, as I agree with you, anticipating the shot makes up for it.

I am getting older, and my vision is poor, so a great AF system is really important. Now, often times I don't realize the shot is OOF until after shoot and looking at it on computer, so this is of paramount importance to me. I can't trust my eyes like I could in my youth.

thanks Mavgirl!
