A buddy of mine was showing me pics on the LCD screen of his D300 when we met up a couple weeks ago to shoot birds at a local park. When he zooms the first press takes the photo into what appears to be almost a 1:1 preview.

I did a test on my 50D where I uploaded pictures to LR4, zoomed in 1:1, then put the card back in the camera and took the same picture to 1:1 on the LCD. I noticed it took about 8 to 9 presses of the zoom button to reach close to 1:1. I couldn't actually get 1:1 as it seemed either too much or not enough with the 8 & 9 presses.

Is there a feature to turn 1:1 zoom on for the LCD? Basically would like 1:1 preview with a single press.

If I remember correctly the LCD did not portray the same IQ as the monitor when looking at the 2 pics side to side, so this may not even be a useful tool in the field. BUT, I do have a bad habit of looking at images while in the field and zooming in to check the IQ :o Kind of like a kid at Christmas just anxious to see what I have

I shoot with 50D & 5D2 if it matters.

Thanks for any feedback

Magic Lantern has a feature that zooms you in all the way on first press during playback (along with a kajillion other features). You may want to try it out.

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

Modern canons will do it (5d3, 6d etc) - even zoom 100% to the focus point.

All canons will do it with magic lantern installed and properly configured.

It would be very easy to install Magic Lantern and then disable all of the other features, and only use the 100% zoom function.

I used to run Magic Lantern on my 5D Mk II but with the 5D Mk III it seems that Canon been paying attention and has has incorporated many of the ML features right into the Canon firmware. 100% zoom is one of them.

This is the most confusing thing I've ever read on this forum... how could one not be interested in Magic Lantern? It increases the usefulness of any Canon DSLR 10 fold.

Well, not everyone wants to rely on unofficial firmware hacks, and having to ensure that it is loaded on all your CF cards all the time, etc.

I guess. I'm not putting it on my 6D yet because it hasn't had a stable release, but I had it on my T2i and all my cards and loved it.

ML is nothing more then software that runs along side your current firmware. It is not actually a hack since once you remove the memory card, it doesn't run anymore. Think of it as a launcher like Apex or goLauncher for Android phones. It's an additional layer on top of the firmware that is locked down and no way around it. And of course they have to put in the disclosure that they are not responsible for any damage done to you camera for their own reasons but I have yet to hear about any issues with the software.

On my 50D it is one of the few ML options I turned on, used it and decided to never turn it off.
When shooting sports I can quickly go to 100% view to check sharpness and quickly go back to the full picture.
It works like a charm (for me).
