I've been doing the strobist speedlight thing but after seeing the Fireball thread I decided it was time to upgrade to something with alot more power. I picked up a set of older elinchrom strobes up from my local craigslist and was wondering if I made the right decision. I realize they lack the ability to remotely control the settings but I got a great deal on them despite one of the 500 heads not working (quoted $140 to repair). The deal became even better when the seller emailed me a week later with an offer to pick up some accessories at no extra cost!
Before anyone asks about modifiers I do have access to a 39" softbox and a DIY Maxilite/BD reflector that I made. I also picked up a 36" octa (SP studios) from the Buy & Sell on this forum but still waiting for that to come in.
Anyway, just wondering if anyone is still using these and can they be operated with an external battery pack such as the Vagabond Mini or similar? I couldn't find any specs on them but I'm assuming the 1000 should be able to overpower the sun!
