I'm having issues with my flash not working properly in ETTL mode.

Not sure if it's something I've done or a problem with the flash itself.

Before in ETTL mode I could shoot away happily and the camera would adjust the flash to suit the exposure. If shooting in AV mode it would generally give me a decent shutter speed so I could shoot hand held.

Now when shooting with the flash in ETTL and the camera in AV mode the camera is using a shutter speed as if the flash was not there. The flash still fires but the camera uses a long exposure.

What have I done or do you think there is an issue with the flash itself?

I just purchased a used 1D mk4 today and it is the same scenario for both my 6D and the 1D mk4.

All advice is appreciated.

That's normal for the default settings in Av mode. In the custom functions, you can set the camera to use a higher shutter speed. For the Mk IV, it's C.Fn I -15.
