Greeting all, this is my first post here.

I've convinced myself I would like to buy the 24-70 f2.8 for my 7D. I plan on buying the 6D in 2-3 years from now, and for what i intend to use it for is a better FL range for me than say the 17-55 f2.8.

This is somewhat of an ofd question, and I'm considering renting it first, but I'm hoping someone with experience can save me a $130 before I might rent one...

I'm wondering if the amazing DOF control of this lens is lessened any used on a crop sensor. I say that because a considerably smaller portion of the image circle will actually be utilized on a crop. Anyone have some insight here?

From experience shooting with the 70-200 f2.8, this hasnt appeared to be an issue on my 7D. My intuition tells me it won't be an issue with this lens either.

I don't take spendin this amount on equipment lightly, so any feedback before i shell out the cash is much appreciated.

Thank you in advance

It basically breaks down like this if you are using the exact same lens.

If you stand in the same spot and take a picture with both cameras the crop sensor will appear to have narrower DOF.

If you step back with the crop body so that you have the same framing with both cameras the FF will appear to have narrower DOF.

That being said, either way, you get more control over DOF with a faster lens regardless of if you are on FF or crop.

If you are considering a 24-70 and want to save about $1000, I'd take a look at the Tamron VC model. It takes some incredible pictures.

Welcome to POTN :D
I posted this exact question a week ago. I have the 17-55 and was considering the 24-70 II as an upgrade. As the 17-55 is so highly regarded I wanted a hands on comparison from a user, but no one appears to be using a 24-70 II on a 7D.
Why don't you buy it then you can tell me :D

h14nha, I might just have to do that! I will rent the lens regardless before I buy. In fact I'm going to New Orleans next month, and I think that will be the perfect opportunity to rent and try it out. I'll post some samples after my trip.

I'm sure the lens is amazing, it is sort of the flagship EF lens afterall, and I've droolled over countless samples taken with it on the internet ever since it came out. I will probably pair it with my 60d while there to save some weight, plus i don't anticipate doing any action shots; that will accomplish testing it out on a crop just fine.
