Forced into ETTL...

Well I am doing a test shoot with my new YN622s w/ Canon 430EX II. And I am trying to run it in manual only mode for a setup lighting situation where I do not need nor want ETTL as ETTL would just give me inconsistent lighting when the subject isn't really moving a lot. So I put my 430 EXII into manual mode, then hit the shutter (half way to focus) while looking at the 430 EXII and see it change itself to ETTL & high speed sync, and no I am not above the 1/250th mark, I am at 1/125th, 1/160th and 1/200th tested this... kept changing back to ETTL/High Speed Sync... I am using a Canon Rebel XSi.... Am I missing something?

Chris - don't set values on the flash; use the camera's flash control menus.

The 622 transmitter remembers the last values used, and on startup the camera reads the flash values in the 622 and uses them to set its values as displayed in the menus. The flash is then forced to reflect the values as adopted by the camera.

It seems that the 622 is still in its factory default state. Change camera flash mode to Manual: the rest will follow.

PS - make sure that all elements are powered up before setting the menu.

Yep, like clivey said, the 622 receiver on the flash is reading the values set by the 622 transmitter on the camera. You can change the setting in the flash all day long but the receiver will just keep changing them when it gets a signal from the transmitter.

Also it will not matter if the flash is in HSS mode. If the SS is below max sync speed then the flash will act as it normally would even if it wasn't in HSS mode. It's only once you go over the Mac sync speed that the flash actually fires in HSS. Many people leave their flashes in HSS mode just in case they do need to go over max sync and do not realize it.

It is how Canon flash works. You can confirm this by taking two master-capable flashes and set them to different parameters.

Then place each in turn on the camera and inspect the settings using the camera's flash contrrol menus. They will reflect the settings of the Master of the moment.

The 622s are another Master. They too remember the last-used settings, and it can be important to remember that the effective settings depend on which 622 is mounted on the camera.

The E-TTL ratio value and Manual group levels are not remembered.
