The spinning balls are nice. That's about all I see. It's not loading.

It has to be very nice for me to pay $50.00 a year. Back to good old 'photo.net' for me if I don't like it by February next year! Flickr was so convenient. Sigh.

Anything wrong with paying 0$ / year? Then block the adds in your browser.

But seriously - you think $50 is lots of money? Have you considered what the cost would be if you, yourself, had to host something similar? From an economical standpoint, it's quite hard to see any of their offers to not represent good value for the money.

Another thing you loose if you go from a Pro account to a free account is the ability to replace a photo.

Where is that now? It used to be in the actions.

On the photo page, the three little dots in the lower right corner of the black background have a pop-up menu where the option is listed.

Wait...what???
My question now is what is different between current "Pro" accounts and the new free accounts? They are giving the option to continue paying for Pro renewal, but why would anyone continue to pay for what appears to be identical service as a free account?

The free choice shows ads. Does the Pro account show ads?

This is clearer than the information we had yesterday, thanks for sharing.

I'm on the fence about the changes. There are elements that I like, and some that I don't. I do feel, though, that the new account options are a slap in the face for many long time Pro users who make up the core of the Flickr community. It's great for Free users and newcomers, of course. I'll have to play around the new interface and see if I can get accustomed to it and get to like it before I decide whether or not I want to stick around.

What account option is a slap in the face? That a Pro user pays only half as much to avoid ads?

I actually like to see the stats. Since most viewers probably don't leave comments or favorites, it gives you a good idea of which photos are receiving the hits, and from what source. I suppose it isn't all that important, but then again, how important is a "nice shot" comment, or a "favorite" designation?

I just can't believe they are actually asking people to continue paying for Pro status. Even with an unlimited storage...if the max daily upload is 300MB (i think someone mentioned this earlier), then it takes literally hundreds of years to reach the 1TB limit on free accounts. Would be interested to see how invasive these ads can be on the free accounts.

What max daily upload for Pro accounts? Aren't you mixing in information that have been mentioned for Free accounts now?

I like the way this looks.

Interesting. Add ?details=1 to the back end of your page and it reverts the display to the old spread out format.

Example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/skatchkins/page4/?details=1 (external link)

Still has the timeline-esque header though.

this is my page

I can't locate info on a daily limit, but Free users now get to upload videos up to 1GB, and get unlimited monthly bandwidth, so I doubt there would still be a daily max of 300MB.

Free:
  • 1 Terabyte of photo and video storage
  • Upload photos of up to 200MB per photo
  • Upload 1080p HD videos of up to 1GB each
  • Video playback of up to 3 minutes each
  • Upload and download in full original quality
  • Unlimited monthly bandwidth

Just that it appears as though Yahoo decided to reward Free users and newcomers, and ignore the loyalty of long time Pro users. They are making it tempting for some Pro users to switch to Free, and at the same time they are saying, "If you leave (Pro), you can never return, and you forfeit all of your current Pro benefits. But we are giving you the option of later on giving us even more money for only removing adds, or doubling your storage." The new business model is a slap in the face because it makes loyal users feel unwanted other than for their money.

I disagree. If they only cared about getting the money then they'd double the fees for pro to be the same as the ad-free membership or just get rid of the pro memberships and make us all choose an option in the pricing scheme. It looks to me like they are rewarding the existing pro members by effectively giving us the ad free membership at half price. They even offered right up front to give pro-rated refunds to people who were paying for the pro membership to get things that are now free.

Pretty much hate it. And of course, I just paid to renew Pro less than a month ago. Typical. Will never give them another dime at this point, whether the new look grows on me or not.

So take advantage of their offer of pro-rated refunds and convert your account to free.

I can't believe they did this without some sort of beta/feedback from pro users...

Thanks for the heads-up on that. I sure would've appreciated an email clarifying that option, or at least some kind of prominent notice when I logged in, though.

Sorry, but a free account has to start paying twice as much to get rid of the ads as a pro account. And still don't get any stats. Doesn't sound like a slap in the face.

If you buy an expensive car with 250 bhp, it can't be seen as a slap-in-the-face if the car manufacturer later decides to release an entry-level car that just happens to have the same number of bhp. And having the same score on one metric doesn't make it the same overall.

A pro account can never get as much for the money as a zero-cost account, since zero cost is zero cost. But a pro account gets more for the money than someone with a free account who pays extra to remove ads. Or pays extra for a second TB of storage. The free account have to pay twice as much for ads-free use. And infinitely much more for that second TB of storage.

So exactly how have Pro users been ignored? Pro users gets increased max size for uploaded files. And Pro users did decide the cost was correct when they signed up - they can't magically assume that any change to the site should give them much more than what was agreed in their contract.

You expect a car manufacturer to come visit you and upgrade your car for free just because you were a loyal customer who bought the car - just to make sure your car will be able to keep up with new offerings they have?

Please tell exactly what improvements you expected Pro accounts to have a right to get, to not have to feel ignored?
