Overhere in Ireland alot of old stone houses were turned into sheds/barns as people left the country, did the same happen in the States/Canada, and could this be one of them?

I don't think it was ever a house. I have a few barn pics and a lot of them have stone foundations. Plus, based on the size of the barns, they are much larger than houses of long ago. But I am no expert. The sad thing is that we loose 300 farms a day in the US.
But the buildings will still be there wont they?
