" dedicates the first section of his composition chapter to contrast; saying (to paraphrase) "it's a prime component of photographic composition".
Sharpness, Color, Softness, Light, even Mood.
Not saying you need a lot of contrast; just that it's a big part of the composition. He describes some early pioneers in Photographic Instruction who had their students go collect samples of contrasts he assigns.
