It's a bit of a step up price-wise, but I've slowly moved from zooms to primes after continuously finding that it makes me think and I produce better images time after time. I've got a bee in my bonnet about a move to the fast wide 24/1.4 mark 2

has anyone make the change from a wide zoom to a wide prime?

which lenses did you consider and which did you choose?

I'm a filter user, so no bulbous front elements. I'm not interested in cutting up my expensive lee system!

24 is not almost as wide. I don't know if you use the 17-40 much under the 24mm?
If I would replace my 17-40L it would probably be a 17TS-E and a 35mm. The 17 could accept LEE filters if you are a bit handy. With a 1.4x teleconverter you'll get a 24TS-E as well. But it is not that good in lowlight. If you need something faster get the 24f/1.4. If you just want better IQ look at Canon's tiltshift lenses and the Zeiss 15 and 21. Samyang 14 is also really good for the price, but you have to be creative to fit some filters on that one too.

I agree with your comment about the length difference, but I recently trawled my flickr looking at EXIF and I seem to constantly use the 17-40 between 22 and 28. I also have experience now with my other primes and I do like how it forces you to consider the elements in the frame and to move if you're not happy. It often uncovers new perspectives.

I did consider the Samyangs, both the 24 and 35, but the MF and apparent poorly calibrated focus scale put me off. The 24 has moustache distortion too.

The Zeiss lenses are too expensive! I'll be buying used whatever I get.

24mm seems to be that imaginary limit where the wide angle is apparent but not OTT and evidently barreled.

I went from zooms, to primes, now I'm back at zooms again. Instead of trading my 17-40 for a 24 1.4 II, it was for the TS-E 24mm II. The euphoria of the IQ of the 24 wore off quickly after I was missing shots. "Zooming with the feet" isn't always the best idea when colors are fading quickly and you need to get the shot.

This is all coming from a strictly landscape perspective. I also used my 17-40L at the wide end 99% of the time and sometimes I go even wider and switch to my Samyang 14mm. Like you said, if you're shooting mostly between 22-28mm and you're dead set on a prime, the 24 1.4 II is probably your best bet.
