Not sure if the lens section is the right place to ask about prices, but there is a used Canon 400mm f/4 DO IS on my local craigslist for $3600 USD. It appears to be a good price, but since the lens is rarer than most of the stuff I see listed it is hard to judge what a good price is. From what I have seen it looks like around $4000-4500 is the average going price. Can anyone let me know if you think $3600 is a good price or not? Please and thanks.

Most I see at FM are $4100-4200... So I would say $3600 is a great deal if in great condition.

Sounds like the same thing I'm seeing. I just need to decide if it is worth it to me or not... I love what I see with it, but the 200mm with a 2x TC isn't bad either. I want to use the 400mm DO with a 1.4x TC though. Not sure how the 200mm with a 1.4x and 2x stacked would do.

I got mine for $3,500 recently, and that was after waiting a LONG time to find a clean one at the right price. If it's in good shape, that's a good price.

As for IQ- I find the 400 DO does great with a Canon 1.4 TCII. I'd be surprised if a 200mm with stacked TC's could touch it. And I see you have a 1D3...consider that you could use a 2xTC on the 400 DO if you really needed the reach, and you have more options. I use stacked 1.4TC's on my 7D sometimes, and in good light where I can stop the lens down a notch, the results aren't too bad considering what I'm asking of it.

The reality is that if the 400 DO is in good shape, and you buy it and decide it's not for you, you could sell it without losing much money, if any.
