I'm ready to purchase Lightroom but I have two computers that I bounce between. Do I have to purchase it for each computer or can I use the same purchase for both and somehow download it to each computer?

The EULA for all Adobe products allow you to install them on two computers but you aren't supposed to use them simultaneously.

Direct from Adobes webpage.

"Subject to the terms of the software license agreement, the primary user of the computer on which Lightroom is installed may install a second copy of the software for his or her exclusive use on either a portable computer or a home computer, provided that the software is not used on both computers at the same time. Lightroom is sold as multiplatform software, which means it can be installed on either Mac OS X or Windows."

No, I wouldn't be using them at the same time. I'm not that talented! lol

We have one in our den and one in our bedroom. I prefer the den computer but it's also the family computer so I don't always have access so I wanted LR available on both depending on which was "open".

The license is good for two computers, with the proviso that you are not supposed to use them both a the same time.

However, because LR 5 Beta is now available free (and you could install it on a hundred computers), I wouldn't advise anybody to buy LR 4 now. LR 5 Beta runs stably on my setup, Window 7, with just a few minor bugs, more small nuisances than anything that will endanger your computer. Nobody (outside Adobe) knows when the general release will come, but most people are betting on the latter half of June.

Interesting. Our bedroom computer has Windows 7 so that sounds good. Any ideas on how it would do on Windows 8? That's what's on our den computer (personally I don't care for it but it is what it is).

Can't vouch for Win8, but if you decide to download LR5, I would consider getting more info. Adobe is going to cloud only on most of their software, I don't think this applies to LR5, but I would want to verify that first more than anything before downloading it. If LR5 will be stand alone as well as cloud, then I would download the beta on your win8 computer first, see if there are any bugs and then download it on win7.

LR5 and Win8 are both most likely to have bugs, so it would be better to find them on win8 and then win7 should have fewer issues.

hmmm...food for thought there.

I may just stick with my win 7 computer and look at LR 5 for it.

Our win 8 computer is a powerhouse and that's what I love about it but I honestly can't stand the windows 8 part of it.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Don't quote me, but I thought that win8 has an option to change the settings so that it works more like win7. For editing either computer would be fine, but loading images and moving files around, especially when you have thousands of images, I have the use the powerhouse computer.

Oooo, I'd love to know if that's true!

I do like the powerhouse-ness of that computer but it's other problem (other than the Win 8 thing) is that it has a smaller moniter - like only 20". My other one is a Dell all-in-one thing with a BIG monitor. That makes it so much easier to see things. :)

Numerous Adobe spokesmen have stated that LR 5 will definitely not be cloud only. Moreover they have said that Adobe has no plans to make it cloud only any time in the foreseeable future. When pressed they did say that they cannot guarantee that it will absolutely never happen, only that at present it seems extremely unlikely. They also cannot guarantee that a giant meteorite will not wipe out Los Angeles in 2020. What more do you want?

And even if the impossible happens and when the Beta expires a month from now there is no purchasable release of LR 5, what will anybody that is today using the Beta have lost, provided he has not converted both his primary and backup files to dng?

Download? There is no limit. You can download it to as many computers as you want.

I notice they haven't said that we won't be invaded by giant star slugs that devour everything. I guess we may have more to worry about than this dreaded "cloud" thing everyone is worried about.

and use it simultaneously as many times as your want :D. Nobody's counting unlike CS5 which big brother Adobe is watching.

No, you can't (not supposed to) do that. Using it is a different story. OP asks about downloading LR. There's no download limit. You can install it to as many computers as you want as long as they're all in trial mode.
