Spent a week in Yellowstone last week. Weather was bad most of the time with clouds and rain/snow. This picture is horrible and I am embarrassed to post it really, but I would really like to know what it is. It was a long, long way away. I assume it is a hawk of some kind.

Not enough there to hazard a guess, do you have any more pictures?

Sadly, I only have one other picture and it is worse, believe it or not. All I can really say is it was taken in Yellowstone, near Fishing Bridge, last Thursday, May 16, 2013. It just seems to have a large wing span compared to the body.

At this point, I would be happy to know that it is a hawk of some type or eagle of some type. I would just say hawk but the wings just seem to big, but I know very little about it. I am pretty sure it is not an Osprey.

I will throw out 1 possibility to you 20D based on limited visual information, and then hope Tom the Peregrineflier shows up as I'm not a hawk expert by any stretch.
I kind of get the feeling based solely on wing length and undercoloring that it is possibly a Northern Harrier. Unfortunately hard for me to tell for sure.

Gonna take a stab at this one and guess Osprey just based on the wing color and slight black on the head. Really tough call though.

Yeah, the more I look at it, it may be an Osprey.

I think this is more likely a Swanson's Hawk -- light morph adult

Even though the shot is limited on determining wing shape, the shape just doesn't look right for an Osprey
Also, the white and black two tone pattern on the ventral surface is closer to that of a Swanson's

Either way, there is no way to know 100% because we have very few markers to go by with the angle as well as distortion of the photo

Here's a random image I found of someone's photo of a Swanson's light morph at almost the exact same angle as 20D_Newbies hawk for comparison

After seeing this picture, I think Swanson's Light Morph is about a good as can be done with the picture. Thanks for the help!!
