We have not heard anything about Canon's foveon sensor technology for a while now, however, the fact is that they continue to spend resources on it! That must mean that there is definitely a good application for the technology.

A new patent by Canon just showed up on the web.

If Sigma can market the DP3 as a 46 MP, Canon can do the same: 5D Mk IV@ 100 MP ;-)a

Would this technology compete with the Nikon D800 and D800E or are Canon still off chasing other rainbows?

Canon would be able to smash Nikon, if they wanted.

Then why won't they? Why won't they get rid of the banding? Why wont they improve the dynamic range?

I believe this thread is about to catch fire.

Because other than online penis wavers, most of Canon's customers don't care about the slight differences between Canon and Nikon.

You might not care, but unfixable noise patterns and zero improvement to DR, while the main competition (Nikon) is leaping forward, makes for more than just a "slight difference".

As a ladscaper, these two things are of paramount importance to me, and also the reason to why I skipped the 5D3.

But enough of that! I've already spent months whining about Canon's lack of sensor improvement, and I happily spent my "5D3 cash" on more glass, while waiting for the 5D4 or whatever comes next.

Isnt the 6D sensor an improvement on canons part? Looking at the dpr website raw comparisons page, the 6D totally smashes all nikon cameras at high ISO and looks near identical to the Nikon D4. Dynamic range and banding seem to be better conrolled as well.

The 6D is imporved. Kinda stinks for the 5d mark 3 owners. They need to fix their release cycles.

The 6D series shoudl always be behind to the 5D series IMO, but they released the 5d III before the 6D and messed it up.

Canon is still behind on DR. Look at what you can pull from the shadows on a D600/D800.

I still love canon and competition only helps us out more :)

Not everyone cares about high ISO. Canon sensors tend to do better at high ISO, since shot noise dominates there, meaning that Canon's disadvantage in read noise and pattern noise are drowned out.

But, at low ISO, where shot noise isn't a major issue, Canon's lack of a modern A/D conversion technique really shows. Which is a pity, since, if we extrapolate from the high-ISO results, Canon sensors should actually do better than the Exmor, if only they'd use a column-parallel system like every other manufacturer out there. But they seem to insist on sticking with their 2001-era technology.

Uhm.. That is only on the higher ISO-levels.

On base ISO, Nikon destroys Canon. :)

Quit whining and measuring specs. Go shoot. I never sat around talking to my buddies who had a bigger member. I just went out and rounded me up the best and most I could ;)
