Hey guys,

I'm in market for a filter, not looking for something expensive though since I'm not shooting landscape that much. Although, I'm interested in shooting skies/canals/rivers etc.

Would a Hoya 77mm Neutral Density x400 (ND) 2.7 Hoya Multi-Coated (HMC) Glass Filter do the job?

Improve these type of shots (for example)?

What type of effect are you looking for exactly? Darkening of the sky? Reduction of glare? The filter that you would use depends on what effect you are trying to get.

You're looking for a 10stop ND filter then. Lee makes a great filter system, but the price is a little steep. There are many other manufacturers that makes 10stop filters though.

Yep, I don't want to spend that much else LEE would've been my first priority. The one I mentioned is I think 9 stops as well.

Personally I want a variable filter so I can dial in the light loss I want.

Haha Sirrith, good question. I was all ready to get the Haida, a night before I thought, why not read a guide on using these ND filters? - and stumbled upon this "The Ultimate Guide to Neutral Density Filters by Peter Hill (external link)" . In almost all the pictures, he used the Hoya 77mm ND x400. I looked it up, fits my budget, good reviews etc. And a local friend also told me that it's better than Haida, quality wise. So =)

1 stop is double the light, remember.

If you're looking at 9 stop, take a look at the Light Craft Workshop ones, they were actually the ones I'd intended to get before I found out about Haida.
