Trading 24 70L for 15 85 IS

Have used the 24 70L on T1i for some time and have a few good shots, a large percentage of tossers and a very few show and tell shots.
Camera shake is my problem even on Fiesol tripod.
Really sorry I got rid of kit IS lenses and at this point am considering replacing the 24 70 with a 15 85 IS.

Much of my work is with flowers and close up yardscapes.

It would be a straight across trade for the new 15 80 IS.

Thoughts, please

Just use a faster shutter speed then?

I have a 15-85 and I would NOT trade it for a 24-70. A 24-70 II, maybe.

Hopefully not price wise...? The L is worth much more.

I agree above about using a faster shutter speed though - i'd certainly investigate that first rather than relying on IS to solve your problems. Also when using a tripod, try setting the 2sec (or even 10sec) timer on the shutter to allow it to fully settle before the shutter releases - that will eliminate some shake. Either that or buy a cheap cable release.

The 24-70 is better in pretty much every way unless you need the extra reach in one lens  oh and apart from IS of course!

EDIT: Of course I wrote this thinking FF... having thought about it some more, I get that the 15-85 is possibly more appealing on crop than the 24-70 :)

I don't think the 15-85 is tripod aware to you'll have to turn off the IS when using a tripod, faster shutter sounds like the way to go.

as for the 15-85, wonderful lens

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the input. I respect every reply.
I simply cannot hand hold a non IS system due to age injuries to hands, etc..
Have a cable release and have done the 2 sec delay thing on a tripod. One thing I have not done is use mirror lockup???

Another question I have asked is if the actual shutter action is too sever in .the camera I have adding to the camera movement. Have considered sending the whole shebang to Canon but unsure if that is a realistic option.

Also, and this may not fly well here, the CT 3442 Feisol tripod I use seems very unstable and not of much help unless I tie a concrete block to it for an anchor.

Again Thanks

Jim

Jim - I would not trade the 24-70L for the 15-85 lens. Your 24-70L is worth much more than that lens.

Perhaps sell the 24-70L and use the funds to buy a 15-85 or maybe even the 17-55 (both IS lenses).

:)

please excuse me for saying this, but it seems really odd that you cannot get a sharp image with a tripod. the tech-support side of me wants to think there is something else that is causing this issue. Maybe as others have mentioned, shutter speed and wind on your macros.

that said, the 24-105 f/4 L might work for you.

the minimum focus distance for your current lens is 1.25 feet an the 24-105 is 1.48 but you gain quite a bit of reach.

these lenses are included with a lot of new cameras (so are in good supply) and are on the used market for around $700 USD.

you'd be better off selling the brick and buying the 15-85 and pocketing the change.

The 15-85 is sharper at both ends than the 24-70 is anywhere. The 15-85 is longer. The 15-85 has less distortion at the wide end. The 24-70 has 2.8 and is much heavier. I also have a Tamron 28-75 which is about 90% of a 24-70 for about 30% of the price. For that kind of money, I'd get the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC, and keep my 15-85.

This is disingenious... Of course the 15-85 is sharper at 15 or 85...

In the 24-70 range, for the crop sensor at the same aperture, there is no contest... The 24-70 MkII is IT...

Of course, it does have IS.. and it's 1/3 of the price... but it's not IT....

I'm guessing you have the first 24-70. It can be quite a chore lugging that thing around. (I know, I sold mine because I hated carrying it) If you liked having the constant 2.8 aperture, I would look into getting the 17-55 instead. If you used the 24-70 more on the longer end, then I would consider the 15-85, but I think I will appreciate the constant aperture more.

Sorry, I know it is a very popular lens right now but I cannot see me wanting an 85/5.6 lens.
