Hi folks,

I'm looking for a flash for my G15.

I can see that probably something around he size of the Canon 270 EX II would be the best balance-wise, but it i'm looking for something that would tilt up and down but also left and right. The Canon 380 looks like it will be much too big.

So, does anyone here who owns a G15 or similar, have another brand that they can recommend that has these features and works well?

thanks very much

Ian

I use both a 270 EXII and a 320 EX on my G15. While the 270 is a better balanced set-up the 320 works nicely as well. My 420's seem akward so I am sure the 430, 580 and 600 would be out.

Thanks for the reply James - I am right in saying that the 270EX II only tilts up and down - there is no sideways movement?

You are moat welcome and correct. The easy way around that is the Canon off camera flash chord which keeps all functions as if the flash was on camera.

Here is my new-to-me G15 with my 600EX mounted. Umm... don't think it's too user-friendly.. lol... I even had to lean it back against the monitor because it would fall forward!

(and sorry for the crappy iPhone pic, lighting is awful in my basement, and my flash was unavailable... :) )

I just HAD to try it.... Lol. Very unusable though. I will probably invest in one of the smaller flashes.

I recently bought the 270EX II to use with my G9 and G11. It's a lot smaller than my regular 430EX II, but also much less powerful. The 270EX II is certainly much easier to carry with me, and "fits" the smaller bodies well. I also have the Canon off camera cord, and the ST-E2 wireless controller. The 270EX II works with either option, including HSS.

I still prefer the 430EX II over the 270EX II, because of the added power, swivel head, and other features. But, it's much larger, and taken with me less often. I like to be able to use a flash in daylight with HSS to shoot macros or close ups of flowers, bugs, etc., so I'll bring the OCC or ST-E2 and a flash. The 270EX II will be my go to for this, because it's so small and easy to carry.

If you go with the 270EX II then an OCC would be the less expensive method to expand/improve it's uses. But, it cannot throw as much light as a larger flash.

Dennis

Yes, great info indeed. I do have an OC-E3, should probably try it with the 600EX.

Here's a link you might be interested in;

Also, the red AF assist lamp on my 430EX II does not function on my G9 or G11, since they are not EOS DSLRs. I'm fairly certain that is true of all the G series cameras.

Here are a few shots using the 430EX II with the OCC;

I use a Canon 430 EX 11 on my Canon G12. Works very well. Carry both...along with an extra G 12 battery and extra aa's for the flash, in a small Lowepro 100 slingshot bag.

It's my daily carry around camera equipment.

I use a yn568ex with my g15, just not on camera. I use two yn622c triggers, and hold the flash in my off hand...
