I started with Wordpress but moved it to Squarespace (external link) which allows for a lot more customization. I designed everything on my blog in photoshop! ;) I also have it linked from my website (external link) and designed them to be cohesive but separate.

Wow... thanks for the tip for Squarespace. I really like what they have to offer. If I go that route, will I still need to keep SmugMug? Do they have image print/order/fulfillment process?

Sorry, I know nothing about smugmug... I am not aware of Squarespace offering anything like that, this is not something I deal with for my work. I think you probably will and can probably link you smugmug to anything you set up with Squarespace...

Both.

Website to show your awesomeness. Blog to show the frequency of your awesomeness. :)

Everyone tends to say both (portfolio + SEO). I don't believe that is always the case. Build a website which is built with SEO in mind and a blog in the normal format isn't required.

My website has a dynamic news section. By no means a blog in the traditional sense and it is there mainly for SEO. One image per entry plus a small bit of text. Regardless though my website does very well organically for my main keyword searches and the long tail searches.

Incidentally there is no reason at all why a website can't be dynamic.

I like to do both! First I did quite lengthy blog posts, but now I decided to do small posts only (like 1-3 photographs per post) and to post larger sets of pictures on my portfolio (under a menu item called "Collections"). Blog posts keep your website alive and the advantage is that they are usually sorted on date.

A blog is for short term and a website long term.

Google likes blogs, especially if they have updated info regularly, and they are slow to pick up on a website, but once they do the pages will not be in the back pages like a blog so finding certain pictures is easier.

Both. Website to display your work and a blog to attract search engine traffic.

Agreed
