Hi guys,

I have always loved the 50mm focal length, until I rented the 35L over christmas.

Now I really love 35mm on my 5D2. Plus it didn't help going into the shop today to finally have a play with the Sigma 35mm. I was planning to save to buy a used 35L, but after today the Sigma has really got me thinking.

So either way I go, I think I will sell the 50mm as I feel it won't get much use as the 35s are stunning lenses.

What are your guys thoughts?

I would do it...I had the Sigma 50 and liked the focal length but the IQ was horrid. Picked up the Sigma 35 and the 85L II and am super happy, they are both stunning lenses. If you shoot more people consider the 85mm focal length but the Sigma 35 is a very versatile lens!

Given your gear, the 50L might be a good choice too.

I don't use my 50mm at all anymore. Canon's 50/1.4 isn't particularly nice to begin with (IME. I've owned one and got rid of it rather quickly). 35 and 50 are definitely quite close. Given the choice, I'd sell the 50/1.4 in a heartbeat if it meant I could get the Sigma 35.

Fair call guys.
Just been going over the pics I took in the shop with Sigma 35. That copy appears to have focus shift. Sharp as a tack wide open, then front focuses at f2. Hmmm

I found that in the field I have no issues with the Sigma 35 but in my apartment I thought there was a minor distance dependent MFA issue. Not sure if this is a light specific thing or just nitpicking...the Sigma 35 thread has a lot of talk about this.

Here are the test shots I did at the shop with my 5D2. As you can see at f2 it front focuses quite badly. Sooc focussed roughly at the word "the" on the book.

Do you mean it focus better at f1.4 than at f2.0?

Have you tried micro focus adjustment?

If it's just front focusing I would just use MA and call it a day. However! If it goes past -15 / +15 I would exchange for a better copy.

No, this is called focus shift. It cannot be fixed by micro adjustment.

Save yourself the trouble and aggravation and just wait until you can afford the Canon 35L. You will be better off in the long run financially by buying only once.

I agree with you there, after the frustration of a Sigma 50mm I think I will be heading down the same path with the 35.
I think I'll keep the 50 and continue saving for a second hand L.
It was good to go and see the Sigma in person, it's a fantastic looking lens (like the 50) but it just doesn't perform like the L.

Indeed, mine (and most others') perform better than the L.
