I'm just getting started on all of this so I don't have a great idea when people warn "but it's really heavy" what exactly that means. The kit lens seemed very light, I grabbed a nifty fifty that also seemed super light and then I got a Tamaron 24-75 f2.8 (these are the only three lenses I have ever handled).

The Tam seems about as heavy as I would enjoy shooting with (maybe I should hit the gym). I was considering replacing it with something slightly longer (currently looking at a Sigma 50-150 f2.8) but would like to know the size difference first. Is there somewhere that lists lenses and gives size and weight?

You can find any of the lenses in the B&H or Adorama sites and they will have specs

I was assuming that was shipped weight (box and all) is it actually the real weight?

The Table of Lenses thread, with PDFs of all lenses for Canon mount (not sure if it is 100% up to date):

https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=257659

This includes all relevant specs, including weight and dimensions.

A most useful compendium.

The Tamron, like its its Canon rival would be considered a heavy lens for walking around. It weighs 29 oz compared to he 7 oz of the 18-55mm kit lens., for example. Keep in mind as well that lenses like that are probably most often used with larger and heavier upscale bodies like a 7D, 5D III or even a 1DX. Weight is all relative to the individuals expectations, but a Rebel T5i with an 18-55mm kit lens is a featherweight by comparison.
