Hi,
I really want to upgrade to the 6D and the only thing that turns me down is it's dynamic range.
I mostly shoot landscapes so I really need an improvement at DR.
I saw that the 5D 3 can do built in hdr and save it as raw file, which has more DR than JPEG, and the 6D can only save it as JPEG.

First of all I dont understand how the 5D can save a processed raw file.
And do you guys think that there will be an firmware update that will bring saved raw files at bullit in hdr with the 6D at the future?

The 5D3 saves the HDR image as a JPEG

Whitlam is correct.

To elaborate: The 5D3 does not save the HDR blended result as a raw file, it saves the HDR blended file as a JPEG. What the 5D3 does do, is save the individual source files that make up the HDR as raw files. This is the difference between the 6D HDR and the 5D3 HDR. The 6D does not save the source files.

The obvious advantage: With 5D3 HDR mode, if you are not happy with the HDR result the camera makes, or you just want to experiment, you have the raw files saved so that you can do your own HDR processing later on the computer.

Oh and no, the 6D will not get a firmware update to add a feature exclusive to the 5D3...

You can bracked up to 3, 5 or 7 photos with 6d and produce hdr your way in pc. Much better then let camera decide IMO. 5d and 6d both are saving hdr as jpeg, but with 5d you will have raws as well if I remember correctly?

This.

You should always use bracketing and manually blend the exposure for the best results with HDR, both cameras give you that ability (though I admit it's slightly easier with the 5DIII, magic lantern makes them the same though). Also, if you want to get technical, if I remember correctly the 6D has a very slight (insignificant) edge in DR, but I can assure you either camera will do well for you ;)

Build your own. You can shoot a quick HDR image to get a rough feel, then save the 'source files' a second time on the 6d.

AFAIK, there is no Magic Lantern for either the 5D3 or the 6D.

Exactly. The 5D3 might have an (insignificant) advantage in HDR workflow (if you consider in-camera HDR desirable). Otherwise, yes, shoot an in-camera HDR on the 6D, then bracket your raws. Viola! You have both an in-camera HDR, and RAW source files.

No official release of magic lantern for 6D, but I got the dev version installed on mine without too much trouble. I haven't really tested it yet tho, I just know it runs and my camera isn't bricked =D
