Your default "Picture Style" settings (or the settings you most often use) and perhaps a brief explanation

Picture style don't make any difference if you shoot RAW, which is what I shoot always.

So then when a raw file is opened in DPP, the default settings that are applied are just suggestions based on the Picture Style you used? Ok, good to know.

But what about when reviewing photos on screen? Isn't JPG conversion being done there? Would the Picture Style affect that? If that's the case should I crank sharpness up so my reviewed shots are easier to see?

I use Faithful. It should give you the most acurate representation when you review in camera.

I use neutral when shooting RAW since the embedded JPEG will look at least similar to what the RAW image is. If I'm shooting JPEG I use standard with sharpness up 1 and all the other settings up 2 from stock. I find for JPEGS I love the nice contrasty highly saturated look that those settings produce. if I'm shooting RAW well then picture style means diddly squat

The camera is just a tool - it is not responsible for the picture.

What you see on the back of the camera is a JPG. If you shoot Raw, most folks use Neutral or Faithful Picture Style, because those two most resemble the Raw imag ewithout any enhancement.

That said, on my 5D3, I will often use Standard picture style when shooting JPGs onto my SD card. This makes it easy to move the jpg files onto my iPad and share them quickly and with a minimum of post processing.

I didn't even know there was a setting for picture style, lol. I read up on it and my camera automatically sets it at Neutral as the default setting.

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I just leave it on Standard. If I think I may be tweaking it, or anything else, I shoot raw.

Neutral with -4 contrast and 0 for the others gives you the most unbiased RGB histogram and highlight alert if you want to ETTR and fix in post.

If Windpig had not posted this, I would have, as this is exactly what I do and why, especially the -4 contrast which can make a full stop difference in the histogram.

Good explanation of styles by Canon Japan. You can also download some more or create your own.

Personally I use standard, but only because I shoot a lot of landscapes and find the applied sharpening is close to what I desire. I also shoot RAW so I can always modify in post.
