I've been to three recent school events (Graduations, award ceremonies, etc) in large auditoriums lately and each time I just have to laugh at all the people trying to use their smart phones. You can see them desperately trying to pinch zoom farther and farther and then finally settling for a grainy motion blurred mess. And then the look of bewilderment and disappointment at why it didn't turn out. At least it provides some entertainment during the long student speeches! :)

Samsung galaxy has a 13mp camera, its lens is smaller than a pencil eraser. If thats all I had w/me, thats what I'd use too. Better than missing the moment.

You ARE missing the moment if you can't tell what the picture is about. Better to just watch.

My 1D3 does an excellent job with still pictures, but when it comes to audio and video it falls short. ;)

Last night's band concert provided a handful of photo opportunities, but recording the portions that my three girls were in was a job for the phone.

Besides, phone camera users don't amuse me nearly as much as the parents with a DSLR + 70-300/5.6 shooting in green box.

You can spot them a mile away because the on camera flash pops up every time they go to take a shot. Not that it's going to do any good...:lol::lol:

Yeah, I saw a few of those, too.

I get why people use the camera phones, but in this case I needed 200mm f2.8 @ ISO 6400 and they were trying to pinch zoom from 200 feet away in the dark.

Outside for the group pictures, I am sure the iphones worked great.

so you derive joy and entertainment from a parents' failed attempt to record a momentous occasion... wonderful world we live in. Instead of laughing, you might have offered your services?

Agreed.

It's not about getting the super sharp picture. I bet they are happy and probably happier since they don't need to worry about other people's "worse" camera.

I guess I didn't realize everyone rides such a high horse on this forum.

It's not a high horse, it's called being a human being. Instead of laughing at someone else, why not just offer help? That's being on your high horse? Also, we get at least two of these threads a week where people recount how they laughed or snickered at someone else with less-than-capable equipment in a tough situation. It gets old. We get it, these morons had the little phone cameras, hilarious. You want us all to come in here and slap you on the back and agree with you, 'what a bunch of idiots these parents were.' And when someone doesn't, they're on their high horse. I'm sad for this world if we've come to the point where being nice and offering help is somehow in the wrong

Taylor posted what he felt and that's his right. Personally, I'm no "pro", but for the summer I've offered several local sports groups and one riding stable free photos of their events. Not everyone has good or great equipment but my son (he's 13) and I found a few projects over the summer that are fun and our way of giving back. So far the parents are very gracious and have sent the nicest notes.
I've been the dad years ago struggling with the cell camera, and I know it sucks.

You post a thread with a subject matter like this ^^^ and you say others are on their high horse? Give me a break, you sound like a smug d-bag in your OP, looking down on others because they are trying to capture a memory the only way they may be able to. Sometimes its not about pixel peeping and more about capturing a memory, no matter how blurry or crystal clear it may be. Seems that many forget the reason alot of people get into photography in the first place.
