It might actually be possible that more than one country in the world is capable of manufacturing goods.

Also, there is an image size limit.

Small companies places their production in a single factory.

Larger companies have enough volumes that they make use of multiple factories. And there are no reason why these factories should be close to each other.

Much of the things around you comes from one of multiple factories, and only random choice (or destination market) would decide which factory or which country the item was manufactured in.

Having a single factory would mean a factory fire would result in havoc.

my buddy who calibrated injection molds said they are generic/universal so that any factory with the machine can make the caps with the proper specific mold.

And some people worry that the generic Chinese caps are not good enough for their Canon lenses:rolleyes:

I have been using the generic Chinese manufactured caps for years. Ever since I found out that for the price of one new 77mm Canon OEM side-pinch cap for my 300mm f/4L IS lens, I could replace all my Canon OEM lens caps with superior Chinese center-pinch caps...

Canon has finally seen the light of day and is now equipping their lenses with center-pinch caps.

BTW: for those of you who are wondering why center-pinch cps are superior to side-pinch caps; the center-pinch models are a LOT EASIER to remove and attach when you have a lens hood mounted.

I like the side pinch caps just fine because once I take a lens cap off it seldom goes back on the lens until i'm finished shooting. one thing I'm noticing though is the older I get the more lens caps I lose, and most of those I find again later :D.

man I just paid $15 for an 82mm cap and those Chinese caps are sounding good to me .... especially since I now I have two extra genuine canon 67mm caps and one 77mm .

Just imagine the mayhem that would follow if there was a natural disaster or other event at either location. The lack of new lens caps could upset the world of Canon users for years.

Geographic redundancy is important in data and in lenscap production.

Does it matter?

It's called curiosity. If the question isn't worth answering to you, then just don't answer it.

I'd imagine it's for the reasons everyone has given already; in case of problems at one location.

No doubt both locations make Canon lenses, so they also make the various parts that get slapped on/around them.

It's a conspiracy by Nikon....

If steroids are illegal for athletes, should PS be illegal for models?

It looks to me like the tooling was engineered by the same guy, if not cut in the same factory.

Looking at the injection molding pin points, the gate location, the marking strategy for mold control. They are clearly different molds, since each is marked for cavity 2, but the cavity marking is on different ejector pin heads.

I don't think the tooling was made by the same guy, but from the same blueprint.

There are quite a number of differences between the two. But most of the differences seem to be in the size of the round rings we see. And the digit '2' is different size and different font.
