AF Status Indicator (5DM3)

I am still trying to find out what this is and how we will make use of it.
What I have learned so far is
1. In AI Servo mode this lights up (and not the focus confirmation)
2. In One shot mode both (Status indicator and focus confirmation) light or blink based on the situation.

Found a statement "On the EOS-1D X and the EOS 5D Mark III, the AF status indicator can even be directed to display within or outside of the viewfinder’s image area." on this page
Don't know what exactly that mean?

Any ideas or more information on this?
