There really is no "best". They are different tools for different purposes.
For example, Portraits would use something like 85 1.2 or 70-200 2.8 while landscape would be better with a 24-70 2.8 or wider. Studio shots "best" lens could be a 70-200 f/4 (or even 24-104, 24-70, 85 1.8) since they use small aperture anyways and it's lighter. So really, there is no "best" lens for a person.

for many years it was easily the 70-200L f4 IS for me, but things change and I recently replaced that zoom with the 70-300L.

right now it's the 24-70L II and I don't see that changing any time soon :D.

Bang for buck I would have to say the 135L. Overall jaw dropping ability I would vote for the 200 f/1.8 IS.

These two I own or have owned, and put them in there with my 500mm f/4L IS.

Would give a nut to have a 200mm f/1.8 or the newer f/2 again.

Love my 135L and my 16-35L...wasn't crazy about the 17-40L and the 70-200L was nice, but I don't miss it.

Stunning as it was, it didn't have IS....the f/2 brought that into play.

I've owned 24, 35, 50, 85, 135, 24-70ii, 70-200ii L series lenses and imo the best is the 135L. It was absolutely the best from that bunch imo.

I've owned the 135L (why, oh why, did I sell it!?), and currently own the 24-105L and 100L. In terms of quality the 135 is fantastic, however I rather like the 100L because it has excellent image quality and does double duty as a macro and portrait lens.
