Budget? Size of studio? Overall the top of the list is probably the TS-E 90/2.8 given you know how to work it's magic. Others here willl tell you to get a good macro lens, perhaps EF 100. Gene

what kind of food photography? I often use my 17-55 or the 60mm macro. Or one of my lensbaby lenses. The 100mm macro is also great, but on a crop you have to be further back, since it's basically a 160mm lens then. A nice 50mm works great too, I use the f1.4

You might already have a great lens to use though. I find the extreme shallow DOF so popular in food photos a bit overused lately, and often used wrong since the 'hero' part of the food often already falls out of focus.

As with all these things, there is no "best", best is the one that works best for you, which might not work at all for the next guy

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things

I'd suggest either the TS-E 45mm or the TS-E 90mm. Given the 1.6X sensor, the 45mm would probably be best.

Im not a professional in any way
but for food(specially when I'm out and about) I just like to take shots with my iphone and edit it in Snapseed.

If I was to do it with a my DSLR I would love to use a tilt-shift lens. If only I could afford one(reason why I use my iphone and snapseed, has a nice tilt-shift filter)
