Ouch. Tough call.

If I'm on a WA 'jag' - which is often - I'll invariably stow both in my daypack. The 17-40 for daytime street stuff, and the 24 for evenings and subject isolation. For most FF users, the 17-40 is the cheapest way into UWA, and Lightroom analysis shows I rarely use it above 24 mm. But the 24 . . . oh how I love its 'look' and versatility.

If selling and if pushed, I'd probably keep the 24, and look to save for an UWA 14. Yeah, like that's gonna happen! :)

But if I was buying, then it'd be the 17-40 for outright flexibility.

OK, thanks. You said one of these would be your only lens, however the 24L is much more expensive than the 17-40. I'm curious about if your budget goes up to the 24L, why the 17-40 would be your only lens if you went that route.

But, regardless of your answer to the above, I'd go for the 17-40...to me, the 24L is an awesome specialty lens to have when you've got your other bases covered but it would be extremely limiting as your only lens.

The 17-40 would be a more versatile lens.

The 24L has special qualities that few other lenses can match, but isn't going to be as broadly useful.

I would never only have one lens. The whole point of an SLR is to be able to change lenses.

The first question was gone when I got here...I thought the hijacking was a little funny too but I figured Id go with it so we didn't have a dead thread. :)

burninghotcheese started this one then started a new thread called "Lens Help" instead (not deleting this one). I don't remember the original question, but it was similar to the one posted there on the new thread. Something to the extent of this lens versus a Tamron 17-50mm on a crop.
