While out on excursions or any type of shoot really, normally by yourself do you carry a weapon of some kind (for self-defense purposes), like a gun, pepper spray, taser, knife, etc? I guess my question would go mainly for women, as men can normally defend themselves or don't look so much like enticing targets like a lone woman would, but men can answer as well.

I always have a folding pocket knife with me when I'm out and about. Not so much for protection, but makes me feel better in some situations. My gear is insured though so if someone wants it, they can have it.

why would going on a photo shoot be any different than going out anywhere else? on a photo shoot you could easily have 10 grand of equiptment on you. People will kill and or rob you for a few dollars.

Regardless of what your views of the world are.

a 580ex at full power right to the eyes will probably be pretty effective.

Shane, you've just given Canon another item to add to their speedlite feature list. I might change the test flash C.Fn to be full power instead of 1/32. :-)

I am a big guy, but I don't have any weapon on me when shooting. I've never felt the need to, but I understand that there are bad people out there. Just haven't met any yet.

True, I figure this as well but I mainly said what I did in case there are those who don't think that way.
I, myself have my Lifetime Carry Permit and I carry a Ruger 40C, a semi-small folding knife that is mainly for gutting fish or deer, and pepper spray. Here soon I will also have my gear insured, so if I have to I would swing my camera bag or tripod at someone's face if they were trying to attack me.

I don't know any neighborhood anywhere in Canada where I will need something for defence, because of the neighborhood.
States is different story...

But, walking into the woods at Northern Ontario without something for self defense...
Two weeks ago, news story about Toronto guy who moved up North and meet the Beast...

Bad people exist in every country, evil doesnt stop at the border between the US and Canada. Unfortunately Ive seen the evil this world has to offer face to face during my time in the service and its changed my view of the world and how I go about my day to day life now. Living in a good neighborhood/ town/city/ state/ country or whatever is no guarantee of personal safety. Stateside Ive never had a violent encounter and chances are I never will but if it ever does happen at least I will have that choice to protect myself and my family, thats what its all about.

On the Vegas strip... an auto-opening knife (aka switchblade).

Used to carry a .380 or 9mm. But I figured if I need something up-close, my 055PROBX might do some damage.

I shoot in dicey areas all the time. I never feel unsafe. I carry myself like I belong there. 6'2" 250 pd former Marine not a lot scares me. I've never felt the need to carry anything but my cameras.

Shot expert with pistol and rifle.

Me too, because only I am responsible for my personal safety and also because I refuse to be a helpless victim.

There's that, too. If you look like a victim, you'll probably become one.

I'm the same size, but still like to carry a little sump'n. Thugs tend to come in a multi-pack.

I don't frequent "bad" areas, see no reason to go there. I always carry a knife, useful tool, but I'd not fight over insured camera gear. Pepper spray out in nature, more for animals than people. Nothing I carry is worth fighting for and good luck running away with a 30+lb camera bag. Anyway, fully insured, I'll get new stuff.

If I'd go into bad areas (which I won't) I'd get a taser, shooting somebody over a camera is obscene IMO.

40D, 5D3, a bunch of lenses and other things
