(Roughly) How long of an exposure would I get on my 650D?

I might try some start trails later this summer.

Under conditions of a new moon, and full star track circles, you need an exposure around 90 minutes and a battery in good shape and fully charged should be able to deliver. Obviously have the screen off. In cold weather 90 minutes might be a stretch. With anything in the way of a sliver of a moon or more, exposure will be down around 10 to 15 minutes. Anything more than that and the sky will blow out; likewise with any street or ambient light from a shopping center or housing development.

Canon sells an AC kit so you can run your camera on household current. Look, Ma! No batteries!

The OP is asking how long it will work on a single long exposure. Very different.

Ya, I might not be near AC power. Thanks for this info.

What would happen if the battery died mid exposure? Would it save an image still?

I don't believe so. At the end of that exposure it still has to save it to the card and it needs power for that.

I've done quite a few 30 minute + exposures on a single battery on my 7D.... it helps if it's a colder night...
