I find that sometimes replacing the sky just doesn't look right, whether it's unbelievable lighting in the image you are using to replace the original, or maybe trying to mask leaves, branches, etc., is really difficult & it's just not coming together.

At that point I try to push the envelope, get past the original intent of the image & just go play a bit. The noise in my B&W interpretation breaks up that big batch of white sky & the triplanes add a needed element of interest. Sometimes it works, sometimes you just have to chalk it up to experience & reshoot.

Actually took me longer to find the planes than anything else. I didn't want to use anything that was copyrighted. It was a fun experiment...

This is referred to as "exposure stacking." Not sure about the technical differences vs. hdr, but in stacking the exposures there is no algorithm that helps you out.

What happens if you pull the blue channel luminosity slider to the left in LR ? (Not at my computer at the moment)
