17-40 or 24-105 ?

Guys, im on this decision that i can't do with out your help. Im using T3i and i will use this for family party and to my kids school event. Now please help me pick one. 17-40L or 24-105L?

for what its worth, i dont think 24mm on a crop is wide enough so that might be an issue when working in small spaces.

I have and love both lenses but don't find either work for me as well on a crop camera like yours (they're both great on full frame or 1.3). Why not the 17-55 2.8 IS?

I use the 17-40L on both crop and FF camera's, and I love it. Tried the 24-105L, loved the extra reach but found it not wide enough, between the 2 go 17-40L.

EFS 15-85 may work for you.

Tamron 17-50 non-VC or Sigma 17-50 OS. You'll be thankful for the better range and faster aperture on your camera for those intended uses.

the tamron is sharp and the 2.8 aperature is nice, but its loud and it's AF is not that great. i've read the sigma is great though.

the 17-40 seems to capture amazing colors but it only ranges from 17-40 and is at f4. the 24-105 has IS, which is great, but imo it's not that sharp for a L lens.

if I were you, and if funds allowed me to do so, i'd get the canon efs 17-55 2.8 or the efs 15-85. if the funds were a little more limited i'd go for the sigma 17-50 over tamron's copy.

only you can decide what you need more, Wide or Reach

if you are shooting school events and parties, i would get the 24-105 over the 17-40.

that being said, I would get a tamron 17-50 nonVC over the 24-105

In my opinion a 17-40 is a waste of money on crop when there are so many awesome alternatives...heck, a friend of mine just picked up a Tamron 17-35 2.8-4 for dirt cheap...roughly the same FL, but you gain a stop on the wide end for about half the cost of the 17-40L.

You want the Canon 15-85mm IS lens.

What does that have to do with anything? It comes as a kit with some of the very high end stuff...doesn't mean it's a bad lens.

There really isnt much reason to buy a 17-40 for a crop camera. There are better options for the crop in a similar price range like the 17-55 2.8 IS.
