my sigma 105 died. The AF broke. I read on a site how to fix it, but I'm not gonna bother to take it apart myself.

What shall I get

Canon 100mm or the L?
Considering the Tamron?
Share your thoughts please!

I've bought all my lenses used but 2... and I think I am going to buy a new one this time so I want something nice. I bought used till I could make sure and decide what worked for me. I love macro so much.

I have a lot of butterfly gardens and I love to take pics of butterflies.
I think I should need some fast AF. I have read a lot of threads that say the canon lenses are so close. I dont know if it's worth it to have the L.

Any hints of a version 2 coming out?

Do you actually need AF for macro?
The majority of macro shooters don't use it as they prefer the ratio of keepers you get with manual focus.

I actually use it and like it for some shots. In addition I should have said that I'm not sure the MF on the lens works proper any more 100% either. I tried it and I struggled with it, and the image didnt appear to be completely in focus.

But yes I used it on almost all my butterfly shots and such.

I've heard some say there's no need for it in macro b/c it slows it down. What's your thoughts on that?

I do like IS for macro because I do mostly handheld and my hands aren't particularly steady. If you do mostly tripod macro or have steady hands, you may not need it. IS adds about $500 to the 100mm Macro.
