......in September I shall be in the position to add a new lens and body (with tripod and gimbal).

I cover most of the photography cliches! landscapes, wildlife and motorsport.

I have a couple of options available to me, 5D3 with a 500f4 IS version 2, OR, 1DX with a 500 f4 IS version 1. I realise there are pluses and minuses to each option. I guess the lens will stay 'current' for longer.

Are there any users out there that have moved from the bodies / lenses and noticed much of a difference?

Recently, there have been threads on here where the financial side of things has come into the equation. The money I will be spending is part of an inheritance and is a strict budget of 10k (UK pounds!) chances are I won't be in this position again, so want to make the right choice.

Thanks

With 10,000 quid I would definately go with the 5dIII. Good for everything. Maybe some faster glass? I noticed that you have a lot of f4 lenses. However hopefully by then the 7d mark ii will be out, then things will get interesting.....

500mm mk2 and 5D3. Not from personal experience, but I've heard the new 500mm is superb, especially with the mk3 teleconverters. You'd be still at the cutting edge lens wise for another 15-20 years with that investment, whereas there is a newer, better body every few years. In fact, since you already have a 1Ds2 (all time favorite body of mine, had one for years) you could get the lens + TCs and use the bodies you have, and if they seem lacking then start looking at a new body.

As much as I love the 1DS2, it has to go as I'm finding it's high ISO performance limiting. Obviously fine during the day, but it struggles as soon as it gets near dusk (which is the primary reason for the 500....owls)

As much as I would like a 1DX, it looks as though the money would be better spent on the version 2 500 and a 5D3........unless the mythical 7D2 is announced by September!

With that amount of funding available, I would fly to the US and take advantage of the lower prices for high end equipment. You can get more for your money and even if you pay VAT on return, you'll be ahead. Just a thought!

Equipment list - According to the wife - "how many more lenses do you need? Yet another camera?" ???
