Evening all. Your opinions if you would be so kind.

I am the very proud new owner of a gorgeous 27" Samsung PLS Quad HD Monitor (Model S27B970D). - http://www.samsung.com …ype=series-7-and-9-3d-led (external link).

Now, out of the box this screen just BLOWS you away. Each screen is individually calibrated at the factory and it has been designed from the ground up with photography as one of its primary uses.

Based on this, whites are absolutely brilliant pure white and colours are simply outstanding. Now with this of course comes some kind of quandry. My workflow for editing shots has been based up on my old 22" samsung TN screen which in comparison is exceptionally dull and whites (which I thought were white) are unbelievably dull (I was horrified).

Anyway, on what was a rather sparsely bug populated day, I managed to get a couple of shots. One of a bug that decided to turn its back on my just as I was taking the shot and another a little more compliant. I've made some processing adjustments as I felt necessary to compensate for colour temp warmth from the flash and so on. Now, these images look wonderfully vibrant on this screen. I was hoping people would be kind enough to offer their opinions. Of course, this is all dependent on whether you run a calibrated or non-calibrated screen as I understand each person is likely to see the images differently.

Image 2 - Compliant Fly (which does seem significantly under-exposed but the actual image was significantly under exposed anyway)

Ian,

I view all my the pictures on a laptop, and find myself adjusting the angle at which I view because the pictures vary so much with a few degrees difference in viewing angle.

My verdict is the first looks really vibrant, yet still natural, the second just looks wonderfully natural.

They look good to me.
The only thing I normally change re colour is the colour temp of flash shots to about 5500'c which looks more normal to me. I never play with vibrance and only ever sometimes reduce saturation to stop colours blowing by changing the colour rendition from standard to neutral and/or reducing saturation via an RGB histogram. I reckon if you go by histograms rather than colours on a screen it does not matter too much what screen you are using (apart from it looking a lot better).

Thanks Bas and Brian. Much appreciated.

I'm now in work and they do seem to look ok too. I did notice that most of the images I took and edited prior to getting the new screen actually looked ok on the new one too so I kind of compared the results. It's just that this monitor is SO bright (LED backlit) and everything just looks unbelievably amazing :).

One of the things I've noticed on the 7D is although it handles WB very well, when I'm shooting my macro stuff, the images tend to be exceptionally warm (prob. due to the flash too) so I normally reduce colour temp down to around 5500 also (+/- 100/200K). I then often reduce vibrancy by about 10%, saturation perhaps by 5% and then I lift the greens back in by sliding both the green and yellow hue sliders to the right by 10%.

What I do love about this screen is that I can view it looking down, up from the left or right and there is no variation in colour saturation, image brightness or anything unlike my previous monitor. Slight change in my seat height and it altered the entire image.

They both look very good to me on mine Ian - what would be a good test for you is to start afresh on a RAW file from a week or two ago, edit it now as you see fit on the new screen. Then, and only then, find your first edited image already posted online and place them side by side in the thread to show you any differences...

Cheers Denis and UKSeagull. Appreciated once again :)

Denis, it's a joy to look at I have to admit. I've pondered over it for about 4 months haha (It's not a cheap screen at all) and finally decided to go for it. I'm not in the slightest bit disappointed :).

They look fantastic on my "old standard" monitor, and by old I mean age, not quality, it's the last of the CRTS, a Sony FW900.

On my new Dell IPS, I am seeing banding in the intense greens of the background, which is a first for me. No idea why these images would do that.

Cheers Jake.

Weird as I don't see the banding on this screen or my old one :). Perhaps it's Jpeg compression. I did crop a little but not a huge amount.

interesting :)
