Trying to decide which is better for indoor sports.

AF speed and sharpness at f2.8 is important!
However I don't get paid for this so $800 in my pocket is also very important :)

1. Tamron 70-200 f2.8 vc
2. Canon 70-200 f2.8 is mkii

Does anyone have any experience with both for indoor, low light, sports? Or has tried the tamron for that purpose?

subscribed :) I'm eyeing on tamron. While canon's ver.2 is best of the best, optically is not far behind I think based on posts here.

Most say the Tamron AF is too slow for sports. Are you sure f/2.8 will be fast enough?

Is this the new VC USD version you are talking about? The B&H reviews have a few people saying its good for sports.

Back the the OP: I have never used the Tamron, so this is just my gut talking here, but I would rather use the Tamron with a 7D than the 70-200/2.8 II on a rebel with only one cross type AF sensor. I would save some money on the glass and pick up a better body if you are going to be shooting indoors action. A 7D would be great and even a 60D would be a vast improvement.

Another option is to get the Sigma 50-150/2.8 OS. If you are shooting indoor sports, basketball comes to mind, the extra wide angle on the 50-150 might work better for the guys on the near side of the court to you.

This is a couple of shots that I took indoor at a local RC race Thursday night. It was the 1st time trying out the Tamron 70-200 len indoors that I just got. Hope this might help. I did have issues with focusing but I think it was more the camera a T3i then the len but not for sure.

Thanks for the advice!
I am actually waiting for the "fabled" 70D.. Hopefully by this summer :)

Lens #2 is a terrific lens that makes no compromise in quality or focus speed.

these were taken with the 7D and Tamron 70-300 VC. I think it's too slow to focus but once you're locked in its hard to beat the IQ. I've tested the IQ with the 70-300L of Canons and its only by a bawhair that the canon wins. Focus is much quicker on Canon L's anyway but the price of the Tammy is hard to knock back for the amazingness of this lens.

Not the best shots, but it's the first time I'd had ever tried any sports.
