I came across this when reading more about MF lenses. I have a rokinon that I use for video, but I used it recently for a landscape and I really like this lens. The colors are pretty, and I'd like to use it more for landscapes. I use it for video a lot.

I read a focus screen might help me but what I'm finding online is a little confusing.

Anyone care to share what they know?
Any recommendations on where to get a good one?

It depends on which camera body you have?

Take Care,
Cheers, Patrick

I don't believe you can install alternative focus screens in the 7D. While Canon doesn't encourage changing focus screens in the 5D iii, there is an expensive split screen from Haoda, I believe, which will work.

Focussing screens cannot be generic although some may fit numerous models...ie, all Canon's 1srs bodies, back to the film bodies, utilise the same screens.

Katzeye make a replacement for the 7D with a split prism centre for assisting with critical focus.

I believe there's no custom screens for 5d3 and 7d, you can search through the custom functions, for an option. 5d2 have an option to choose what screen installed.
With katzeye you won't have this option, and most likely will have some metering troubles.

I'm going to check into these options, thanks everyone.
It sounds like this is proven to be a difficult task.

Any suggestions for MF lenses. I have a 50 1.4 and the 35 mf. I am considering a rokinon 85mm b/c I want the DOF for some portraits, but I've heard that focusing can be difficult at such a shallow DOF.
any suggestions?

You could try a loupe attachment for your LCD, and then use live view to focus.

If you are doing tripod mounted stuff, just go to live view, then zoom to 10x on the live view and you'll be able to focus well enough. Otherwise, you'll probably want a focus screen.

Here's the first one I happened to find, at Adorama:

I bought a cheaper one than the one in the link to play around with MF on my 60D. Haven't had much chance to play around with it, though.

For landscapes, both of your cameras will do live view. Use that, zoom in 10X on the area you want to focus on and then focus.

It provides a bit of magnification, but more importantly it effectively turns the LCD into a viewfinder and because it's self-contained you don't have to deal with things like glare on the screen.

The one I got (can't recall the brand) attaches to the LCD with a magnetic piece that you fit around the screen. The connection isn't so sturdy that you can walk around with the camera swinging on your sling without the loupe coming off, but it's good enough to keep the loupe in place while you're working. This really makes it more of a tripod shooting tool than an all-the-time tool, for me.
