Is there any testing one can do when they are looking to purchase a used lens? other than looking for cracks in the lenses both front and back and doing some test shots? any other info would be greatly appreciated. :)

Focus accuracy - easily done if you have live view, a bit harder through the VF. Basically take a picture of a decently lit, high contrast target and check focus. Unfocus and repeat several times. The focus should fall at about the same spot every time. If it's a zoom, check at both ends.

Make sure IS functions properly.
Make sure limiting switches work right.
Make sure MF switch works right.
Check for zoom/focus creep.
Check for loose screws in mount.
Check for contact wear. At the same time gently press each contact and make sure it springs back ok.
SHine a bright light through the lens and look fur junk inside.
If your body is MFA capable, MFA the lens and check if you are approaching one of the limits +/-20. My limit is +/-15. If the lens needs more than that, it's a pass.

I'm sure there is more but this should get you stated.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.
I used to hate math but then I realised decimals have a point.
