Is there any testing one can do when they are looking to purchase a used lens? other than looking for cracks in the lenses both front and back and doing some test shots? any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Basically take a picture of a decently lit, high contrast target and check focus. Unfocus and repeat several times. The focus should fall at about the same spot every time. If it's a zoom, check at both ends. Not sure why, but call me JJ.
