I think the answer is... it depends.

I believe if you are using the 622 with the flash in Manual mode, it should work because the flash is doing a simple fire at X power setting. However, if you are set to ETTL, the flash emits a pre-flash allowing the camera to detect exposure of the flash... the pre-flash will cause whatever is connected to those items to fire at that time, and it won't recycle fast enough to fire again during the exposure.

yea, tried using ETTL off-camera flash, its not for me (as its too inconsistent) so keeping it manual always when doing off-camera speedlight flash photography... So if manual, its totally fine?

I don't know if I'd bet on it...

The only reason I say this is because a flash set to be a Master may still provide a pre-flash coded sequence, in case there are other slaves 'listening'. I don't know how the 622 handles this.

I recently sold my 580EXIIs and 430EXIIs, and I don't have any ETTL capable triggers - so I have no way to test this.

Curious though... regarding your inconsistency, are you referring to the actual lighting?

Since I picked up the ST-E3-RT and a 600EX-RT, I've found myself shooting off-camera stuff in ETTL much more often than I ever had before.

The on-camera 622 acts as a disabled master. Since communication with the remote 622s is radio, there are no control flashes to confuse optical slaves. So if you want to use a simple optically triggered flash in your lighting setup, 622 manual mode will work as there is only the lone exposure flash. If the master 622 is in ETTL mode, a pre-flash aware speedlight (S2 mode on the Yongnuos) can be successfully synced.

If an ETTL compatible flash is mounted on the master 622, it's treated as a group A flash and emits a normal pre-flash in ETTL mode or a single flash at the group A power setting in manual mode.

inconsistencies of output from ETTL, since its outdoors, lighting changes, so output will change, I've tried to do ETTL off-camera flash, its just changes from too bright, not enough and about properly exposed... so not worth it at least with the 622s and 430EXII, I would assume having pocket wizards and 580/600EX speedlights would increase consistencies

Check the link for wireless flash in my signature. It has detailed instructions on how to set up your 430 as a slave and everything else you need to know.

thanks for your effort......appears to be a very detailed article thats understandable when studied with all components in hand....... nice contribution of material there
