Maybe I was to far away, zoomed in so much that there may have been camera shake. What do you think?

My first thought.

And are you using a (cheap) filter of any kind?

Thanks for the replies
I noticed it looks a lot different posted here than it does in LR4, I think alot of it got lost (details) in resizing for posting here. Haven't figured out how to resize from LR4 to the web.

Not really but without side by side I don't know.

What lens, focal length, about how much % is this shot vs. the entire frame?

Looks like the focus was maybe a bit in front of the horse and you cropped it a TON.

When you crop that much you will lose detail and look out of focus. Especially using the kit lens. Another thing to remember is that most lenses are a bit soft at their extremes, and again that is double so the kit lens.

were you going for the horse, or the tiny bird at it's feet..? remember the rule of thirds, the horse (and bird) are smack dead in the middle.

Thanks to all for your help, I was warned about buying a kit, was told to buy the camera body and use the extra money for a good lens, but I didn't listen.

I was focusing on the horse, the head, eyes, don't remember seeing the bird in the view finder.

Thanks
Don

It's also going to be very difficult to get the crispness of an L series lens without an L series lens
