Since my needs for a 60mm Lens for fullframe seems to be unrealistic, im deciding on which 50mm lens i should jump next.

I read alot of reviews about the 50mm 1.2 and the 50mm 1.4.

Its sure the 1.2L is better with better bokeh etc. But im still trying to figure out if its worth for me, paying that much.

So i decided to open a new thread called: RATE YOU NIFTY FIFTY :D

The game is simple:

50mm 1.2L:
Sharpness: 0-10pts
Colors: 0-10pts
Focus: 0-10pts
Rendering: 0-10pts
Ergonomics: 0-10pts

etc.

Hope you understood ^^

50mm 1.2L:
Sharpness: 8pts (if you're pixel peeping)
Colors: 10
Focus: 9
Rendering (buttery): 14 :p
Ergonomics: 11

I tried out the 50 1.4 and to me it wasnt that great. I made the mistake of getting the Sigma 30 when I should have got the 35L on my crop, this time I made the right choice.

Okay, i think we will have the same perspective on how we would rate lenses, since we both own the 135mmL

Ergonomics: 1 A useless focusing collar and an even more useless detachable hood... With that little plastic tab in the back that can ruin your day...

I used to have one, hardly ever used it. I found the focal length too long for using as a walk-around lens, it was soft at 1.8, focus was erratic, and had flimsy build. In my opinion, it has a very over-rated reputation.

I just sold the f/1.4 and I currently have the f/1.2. If someone is going to rate the bokeh of the 1.8 at an 8 then the scale needs to go much higher than 10 to accommodate the f/1.2L. :)

Lens is sharp... not blind!...

If you look at the Exif, and judge from the photo, this was shot literally at high noon, in the open, which makes for extreme contrast. What you see in the background, are other plants and grass literally inches away...

It takes some learning to work this lens.

I used it in shooting an indoor concert and did not like the results, so I spent a Sunday on a photowalk. When I came back, I had a new appreciation on what this little gem can do.

Personally, I shoot for shallow DOF quite a bit, but I don't go crazy about dreamy creamy bokeh...

I have has a couple of f1.8 mkIIs and a couple of f1.4s and the f1.4 is a much better lens. It is clearly better built, has better AF, nicer bokeh and is sharper. I would definitely not go back to an f1.8 again but would love to try an f1.2...

I have the 50mm f1.8 and use it on both crop and fullframe cameras. It has given me some of my favourite portraits. Bokeh and quality of bokeh is kind of subjective. I am not to fussy when a photo has noise, and unless the bokeh is distracting I probably wouldn't be as fussy as some here but I am sticky when it comes to sharp photos, and the nifty fifty has been sharp for me. The focus has been good to, maybe not as fast as my usm lenses but mostly good. For the price I paid it is without doubt my best value piece of photo gear. It would in my opinion be worth double the asking price

Your shot looks ok

Here's what I learnt - unreliable. Misses as often as it hits.
I have confirmed this with FoCal, focus reliability was bellow 50%, too unstable to complete the test.
Same results on 7D and 5D3 I haven't bothered to put in on the 6D (might do it one day for interest sake).

May be mine is old, I bought it 2006 I think, may be I have a bad copy, may be due to using high quality lenses my standards are too high.
However, I would sooner shoot with my iPhone 5 than this lens.

As stated earlier, the "Nifty Fifty" generally refers to the 1.8, but I digress.

Here's my go at this...

50mm 1.2L:
Sharpness: 8.5pts
Colors: 10pts
Focus: 9.5pts
Rendering: 10pts
Ergonomics: 10pts

By far one of my most favorite lenses to use for anything non sports related.

Slight movement when shooting this shot. Eyes aren't 100% in focus... user error...
