I have been planning to buy a couple of strobes for a basic studio! But now I'm thinking about buying only one strobe, and to use my existing 600EX and 430EX as fill flash + rear light.

This will save me money, weight and space, while also making my setup more portable. I'm just wondering if it's a common procedure to mix speedlites and strobes this way, or if I'm heading off in the "wrong direction"? :)

Opinions / input will be much appreciated.

You should watch this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cM96RDzMyM (external link)

In short, strobes and speedlites works perfectly together, as long as you know what you are doing.

You can do this, it's just a bit more cumbersome to use IMO. To me, the advantages (control from the camera in manual or ETTL, the ability to use ETTL, small size/weight, HSS as an option) of speedlites, outweigh mixing them with strobes unless you really need the strobe for a specific reason.
Why not just add another 430/580/600ex to the mix instead of a strobe?

I can think of one good reason. Over-powering the sun.

Thanks for the information guys. :)

Yes I have thought about adding another 600EX instead of a strobe. Overpowering the sun is not something that I am interested in, but I thought it can still be nice to have something with a little more kick from time to time.
