Over the past 8 months that I've owned my 200 2.8 L II, I've gotten the periodic Error 01 message when first installing it. Every time this had happened before, I've removed the lens, taken it off, and reattached it to the camera.

When it happened this afternoon, though, the error would not "go away".

I tried cleaning the lens and camera contacts with an alcohol swab and also with a pencil eraser. The next move is getting a proper contact cleaning kit, but should I be worried about there being something worse wrong?

To be sure it was the lens, I tried my Sigma 30 1.4 and it worked fine.

Any insight anyone could give would be wonderful, thanks in advance.

if it's only the one lens, then I would suggest that there's nothing wrong with the body.

If it's only 8 months old, I would be contacting Canon to arrange servicing.
There is no use letting the warranty run out, because it sounds like there
May be a bad connection inside the lens.

I bought he lens from a college professor who bought the lens from B & H new in late 2011.

I was wondering (fearful) if it is a connection inside the lens

Sorry to say it does sound like the lens will need to go in for servicing. I would at least call Canon service and discuss it with them.
