IDPA Match organized for members of the online "SIGforum" ... All shot with my 1D2N & either 16-35/2.8 or 70-200/2.8 IS; had to set ISO at 1600 and shot Av at 2.8 all night so the pics are a bit grainy. CC&C welcome ...

cool! It's hard shooting in an indoor range, with the low lighting at most places. I like 3 and 4 the best.

Thanks! I'm going to be taking a lot of pictures at the S&W Championship next month (which is all indoors). I'm thinking about picking up a 50mm 1.4 before then to give me a decent chance at controlling ISO and aperture a little better.

Stay safe ...

Definitely a 50mm f1.4 or 35 f1.4 workzone here.

Good timing getting those muzzles! Did you use a monopod or tripod? Or would they be in the way?

Actually, I could have used a monopod for a lot of it but didn't feel the need. Shutter speeds were usually in the 1/60 to 1/80 range, with a couple hitting 1/125. All more than doable handheld with the 70-200 using IS, especially since most of the shots were at a focal length of 100mm and under.

I can't really take credit for the timing of the muzzle blast shots, I'm afraid. A lot of it was just luck and 8.3fps from my 1D2N. I took almost 600 shots last night.

I'm leaning towards the 50mm because the 16-35 didn't give me quite enough reach. It's usually hard to get too close to the competitors since they are moving around a lot. A 35-100/1.4 zoom would be great; anyone have one I can borrow? :)

Some excellent high thumbs grips in there.. John Shaw would be proud!

Most of the shots don't seem to be in focus but the shots themselves are pretty good.

Funny how the old pak timer get's the adrenalin rushing hey lol

:D Out of focus or just too much movement for the shutter speed? I actually thought the effect of seeing the gun's movement (1 & 6 for example) was neat. I was shooting at f/2.8 so my DOF was limited, perhaps I need to do a better job of picking a focus point.

Grabbed a 50/1.4 yesterday, hopefully it will help stop the movement though obviously it will add to the DOF issue.

As for the grip, the guy in 4, 5, & 7 really has a picture perfect technique. He's my shooting partner. And we've both been to Shaw's place more than once. Good call. :)

Still no one willing to let me borrow a 35-100/1.4, huh? :D

Todd, it's very much impossible to get to the Mid South Institute nowadays unless you're military, most people are heading to Ron Avery.. pitty. Avery is excellent though, it's just a pitty about Shaw.

As far as the focus, I was actually referring to the focus specifically.. not the shutter speed. For example,
Photo 1 - Nothing is in perfect focus, perhaps it is the noise that's creating that effect though
Photo 2 - Good focus
Photo 3 - Nothing in that image is crystal clear, the most focussed appears to be the right hand knucles though
Photo 4 - Great shot, good focus and the slide action lokks great with that shutter speed.
Photo 5 - Good shot the focus is mainly on the firers left forearm area
Photo 6 - The main area is in good focus
Photo 7 - Probably the best shot overall. Best focus, technique and the weapon had cycled but the hammer was still in action.. niec shot.

Hopefully this explains what I was referring to with my earlier post.
Cheers mate
Cyrus

Cyrus -- Thanks; I definitely see what you're talking about. Photo 1 I'm 50/50 whether it's poor focus or noise, but #3 definitely isn't really sharp anywhere. And that is after shrinking the image to 600x900 from a full size jpg.

MISS isn't totally military but it does tend to be limited to government for the most part at this point. An agency I deal with pretty regularly hired Avery a while back and it definitely brought their training into the modern world. Another place I would strongly recommend is Rogers in Georgia (current USA Georgia, not former USSR Georgia); a lot of their classes are closed to gov/mil only but a few times a year they teach the same identical program to open classes (I've been through both closed and open and it's really the same lesson plan).

Stay safe ...
