But there are ways to get around it. I never use my actual CC for any online purchase.

What are the ways and what do you use? Pre-paid Visa?

You can do it through Paypal to create a virtual credit card number that is good for a certain amount of time and a certain amount of value.

No, don't keep it a secret. Post it here so everyone can learn how virtual CC numbers can be breached. This is scary. I recently bought something from Beach camera through Rakuten. I checked my credit card last night, no fraudulent charges. I hope it stays that way. I will no longer purchase anything from Rakuten.

I bought a 24-70 on Rakuten (Cameta as the marketplace seller) with a Citi virtual number with $ and time limit. I set up the limit as lens price +$5. Couple days later I got an alert text from Citi asking me if I have made a purchase from Channel Inn for ~$8. I replied no, and then the next day Citi called me for more details and they want me to replace the credit card. Not much hassle.

I believe that the $ limit helps a little somehow because the fraud charge is only $8 rather than thousands that I have heard from other people. Also, the fraud charge might down to the reason that I didn't close the virtual number after the payment went through Rakuten. But, it took 3 days for Rakuten to process my order, so someone could still hack your virtual number before you could close the number.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I just checked my Citibank credit card account to be sure they have my current contacts (email and cell phone) so they can contact me if necessary. I do know about virtual credit card numbers but never use them. Are we supposed to get a virtual number from the credit card company, make the purchase then disable the number right after the purchase goes through? I thought a virtual number was only good for x amount of minutes/hours or only good for 1 purchase.

This is a bit weird. Because if the virtual card is used for one vendor, it is locked for him. No other vendor can charge it (he will be denied) even if there is remaining $ amount.
I typically try to keep the $ limit to the last $. e.g. for this $65.xx my $ limit was set to $66.00

With CITI the virtual card can expire in 1 month to 12. You can set the time you want (default being 1 month). You have to do this trough advance options where you get a choice to put only $ limit or $ and time limit.

rndman, thanks for the tips. I'll definitely consider using virtual number on my next online purchase.
