Last weekend I rented the 100mm f2.8 L macro. Loved it. Just pulled the trigger and expect it to arrive no latter than Wednesday. Really excited.

Awesome Lens. I'd have to say mine stays on my camera 95% of the time. It's great for everything

It is a great lens. Excellent for dimly lit museums etc (very good pairing with the 35 f2 IS at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY). I think you'll enjoy it?

I've got a set of tubes. In what situations do you like to use the tubes on this macro?

Smaller bugs, to help fill the frame, or to get a close up for detail of a particular part (eyes, claws, mandibles...)

I use them more on a FF than I did on a crop.

I use tubes quite a bit with this lens because to get to 1:1 you have to be actually at the MFD which is hard to achieve in practice, even with a focusing rail. Thus, even a 12mm tube gives me that extra wiggle room. You just can't suddenly go from MFD to infinity.

But, unlike non-macro lenses with extension tubes, the nice thing about a macro lens with tubes is that the range of possible focus distances it still quite large with a tube on. You don't really have to fiddle around with guessing the amount of extension you'll need.

Aside from my comment above I do seem to not use them when I'm carrying my 7D (which as been most of the time recently), rather than the 5D2. I guess even 1:2 is enough magnification with a crop camera for almost anything I photograph.
