It can be fixed, I have a guy right down the road from me that was just working on the 400mm f/2.8 for another customer. He could fix it for sure.

the question is how much and where in your location could you find such a shop?

Seems to me for a low enough price, it's worth it,. but the question is what's low enough.

Sounds like it needs a new diaphragm, good luck finding one of those for that lens...it might be worth a look around eBay for parts before putting in a bid.

No I didn't. I didn't bid for it following the advice on here.

An experienced TOG has recommended the Sigma 300mm, thinks it is just as good at half the price, so I'm investigating that lens.

I need one for football (soccer) to be used at night games where the floodlighting is not that good. For UK based guys it's the Evostick Southern League.

Are you saying go for Sigma 120 - 300 over the Sigma 300mm, bearing in mind it's primarily for shooting football. Also I have the Canon 70 - 200 with a 1.4 extender.
