I'd like to find out which flash models are controllable from the 5d3's menu.

Obviously, the new 600RT is,
I have a 580EX (original) and the control is limited...

How about the 580EXII? 430EXII?

Are any of the third party flashes controllable? (Metz, Vivitar, Nissin, etc...)

thanks!

I can control my 430EX II from my 7D.

I am sure this is not really a post for a forum and just something you can find out by looking at Canon documentation.

EOS 7D, EOS M, EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, 430EX II.

Check the class 1 flashes on page 5 of Clive's guide to the YN-622C wireless trigger:

https://docs.google.com …FpqNkpBYXBHajA/edit?pli=1 (external link)

Any class 1 flash listed would be menu compatible with the 5D3. Your 580EX is listed as class 2 and as you've found, menu control is limited.

The older Canon flashes, with a "Mark II" designation, were released to give just that, full menu control support. Later units, like the 270 and 320, have this from the beginning, so no need for any "Mark II" there.

You should also realize that if the 580 EX is a class 2 flash and the 580 EX II a class 1, then the 600 EX-RT must be a class 0, since it not only implements and supports everything you can set from the menu of the 1D Mark III/40D (first cameras with flash menu setting support), but the 600 EX-RT also supports settings only the 1DX/5D Mark III and later cameras can access.

What a valuable addition to this thread... Canon documentation wouldn't tell you anything about controlling third party flashes anyway.

To the OP, as already mentioned, the 622 guide is quite handy!

For sure the 430EXII and 580EXII work in with camera control.

My Metz 50AF-1 worked on my 6D after a firmware update, full custom functions, ETTL, HSS and flash controls. Should work find in the 5D3 as well.
