Here is my first attemt with make shift lighting. I used a 1000W work light shinning throught some nylon fabric, a car winshield reflector and a flashlight for a hair light. The only pp is cropping. How does it look?

It looks pretty good except for the hair light. The flashlight is too small and not diffuse enough. it looks like a round spot on the head.

I agree with you queenbee288, the flashlight was all I had so I figured I'd give it a try.

You've got an outstanding light source here...nice and soft.
I'd move the reflector more under him, that will give you a little more "rembrandt" style.
The hairlight is small, as stated. If you could get something else, just a lightbulb with some kind of snoot to avoid flare, it would be an awesome shot.
Once again, the mainlight is awesome though.

I would imagine I could improve this when I get some Alien Bees.

Did you use camera flash of any kind on this? I would like to see where you put your light and reflector. Thanks.

Left side of the head (our left) seems a little too dark, especially the hair, it fades into nothingness.

Very good except for the hair blending into the background. A little more light reflection needed. I think black backgrounds are difficult to work with- they require perfect exposure of the subject.

Hi minime9us, I will take a picture of the setup and post it soon. The main was to my right, approx. a 45 degree angle to subject, no camera flash used. The lights were diffused by a piece of white nylon fabric, the diffusion fabric was about four to five feet away from the subject. The reflector was on my left, slightly in front of the subject and about two feet away.

simatbirch and ajbalazic, I am going to experiment with the reflector position in order to try lightening the left side of the face. I think I can get it to wrap around him a little to help with the hair.

Thank you everyone for your responses.
